Shark Tooth Mound is our fossil pile made up of material donated by the local phosphate mine located just six miles form the museum. Affectionately dubbed, the 'Pit of the Pungo', this fossil rich ore is an unlimited source of Miocene age fossils. Museum visitors can sift through the material and search for the remains of ancient sharks, whales, bony fish, corals, shells and other invertebrates. There are over 50 species! Our staff will be happy to provide personal assistance and other resources to help you identify the fossils you find. Bring a garden trowel or sifter and plastic bags, spend the day collecting with us, and take home a piece of the past.

Located adjacent to Shark Tooth Mound is the “Frank and Grace Bonner Park”. The park is a great place to relax and enjoy a picnic lunch between your visit in the museum and your search for the BIG TOOTH on Shark Tooth Mound.
